| Biography of Dr.
Mel Perlmutter
Dr. Perlmutter's professional and personal development are
detailed here.
Since graduating as a dentist, Dr. P. has remained a conscientious
student and teacher, to keep abreast of the latest developments
in dentistry, particularly Cosmetic Dentistry.
Professional Development
|
|
- 1970 -- Graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University
of Toronto, with the degree Doctor of Dental Surgery.
- 1971 -- Completed one-year internship in general dentistry
at the Genesee Hospital, Rochester, N.Y., with participation in
programmes at the Eastman Dental Center. This was a tremendous
educational opportunity that provided experience in prosthodontics,
endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, and other facets of dentistry
well beyond that of the basic dental school undergraduate programme.
- 1971 – Entered private practice by joining Bramalea &
Malton Dental Group.
- 1971 – Joined the Academy of General Dentistry (see www.agd.org).
At the time, and for many years, it was the only dental organization
requiring continuing education to maintain membership.
- 1977 – Passed the fellowship qualifying exam of the Academy
of General Dentistry, in the top 10 percentile of candidates.
- 1979 – Relocated Bramalea Dental Group to the present
building at 40 Peel Centre Drive, at Bramalea City Centre.
- 1980 – Received recognition as a Fellow of the Academy
of General Dentistry. This honour required attendance at more
than 500 hours of continuing education courses and passing the
fellowship examination. Maintaining membership in the organization
to the present day has involved continuing education that has
been well beyond the minimum requirements of dental licensure.
- 1988 – attended the University of Toronto course on implant
dentistry, the first one offered to general dentists.
- 1993 – Bramalea Dentistry was created, as the partnership
in Bramalea Dental Group dissolved.
- 1994 – Suite #115 was completed for Bramalea Dentistry
at 40 Peel Centre Drive. Periodic renovations and equipment upgrades
have continued to the present. Our many windows provide an outdoor
view of greenery, from every patient operatory and reception room,
that is very unique and comforting.
- 1994 – Joined the Toronto Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
(see www.tacd-online.com).
He has lectured to this group and presented photo displays of
his work for many years, some of which can be viewed
right here.
- 1995 – Joined the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
and enrolled in the accreditation programme (see www.aacd.com).
This has been a tremendous education. Photographing his own work
to show other dentists, in the pursuit of absolute perfection,
has been a daunting task, but very rewarding. His patients have
been the benefactors of enhanced skills and artistry in cosmetic
dentistry. He also lectured in 1997 about the “Twin Cantilevered
Bridge”.
- 1998 – Served as a clinical instructor at the first post-graduate
Aesthetic Dentistry course offered by the University of Toronto.
- 2003 – Won the Smile Gallery competition of the Toronto
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He accumulated the most points
during the year, in which 12 different cases of before & after
photos, were displayed at the dental seminars. Attendees voted.
Points were awarded at each meeting. Dr. Perlmutter has continued
displaying his work at every meeting, including now in 2007. Many
dentists have had the opportunity to learn from his work, as Dr.
Perlmutter has learned from theirs.
- 2007 – Attended American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
annual seminar and several workshops sponsored by the Academy,
read more here.
- 1966 to present – Joined Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity
as an undergraduate student, and has continued as an active member
of the Alumni organization (see www.ao.org).
From 1972 to 1977 he served on the executive, being Continuing
Education Chairman one year. He lectured about dentistry to this
group on several occasions.
- 1971 to present – Member of the Ontario Dental Association
(see www.oda.on.ca).
Dr. Perlmutter has lectured at least 6 times to this group, at
its annual spring conventions, in downtown Toronto.
For most of his career, he has been a member of the Canadian Dental
Association (see www.cda-adc.ca).
Recently-graduated dentists (from Canadian and foreign universities)
have been attending Bramalea Dentistry to learn from Dr. Perlmutter.
- In 1988, Dr. Perlmutter did volunteer dentistry at Kibbutz Yahel,
in southern Israel.
In 1992 and again in 2000, Dr. Perlmutter did volunteer dentistry
at the children’s clinic in Jerusalem, then named Dental
Volunteers for Israel Dental Clinic. This provided no-charge treatment
for needy patients of many nationalities and religions. The clinic
has recently been renamed in memory of its founder Trudi Birger,
and continues its important work (see www.dental-dvi.co.il).
- In March 2006, Dr. Perlmutter returned to The Trudi Birger Dental
Clinic in Jerusalem to perform additional
volunteer dentistry service.
