WHAT’S NEW AT BRAMALEA DENTISTRY?
July, 2008

  1. Mini-Dental Implants are now being placed by Dr. Mel Perlmutter. They offer reduced cost, simpler surgery, and immediate utilization when compared to standard dental implants. They can support new crowns and bridges that are not removable, or can be used to support and stabilize removable dentures. Such upper dentures can have the palate removed. See photo gallery case file.

  2. Achieve Best Appearance Conveniently - New scheduling and coordination with Talisman Dental Laboratory for porcelain crowns and bridges to achieve the best esthetic result. On the day that the crowns or bridges are to be received by patient, a morning appointment with Dr. Perlmutter will confirm that the restorations fit properly and are adjusted for comfortable bite. Then the patient will go to Talisman Dental Laboratory for customized colouring. Patient will approve the appearance and then return to Dr. Perlmutter in the afternoon for the restorations to be attached permanently to the teeth or implants.

  3. OZONE Update.
Dr. Perlmutter was first in Brampton in December 2004 to use HealOzone. Now, Dr. Perlmutter introduces the next generation of ozone technology from Lime Technologies (see www.limetechnologies.net and also www.the-o-zone.cc)
CMU3 delivers ozone to the tooth or gums for beneficial effects.
WSU3 produces freshly ozonated water which is used in the dental office for various purposes. This machine is also now available for purchase for home use.
RAS3 is a room air sanitizer removing odours and airborne pathogens by releasing a controlled amount of ozone. This machine is also now available for purchase for home use.
Ozone kills bacteria and viruses, and enhances wound healing. Dr. Perlmutter uses it in deep cavities, on surface gum ulcers, on surgical incisions, and with mini dental implant placement.

  4. March 8, 2008 was very eventful here - an educational day for our staff and 12 dentists, organized by Dr. Perlmutter, with Dr. Todd Shatkin (from Amherst, N.Y. lecturing about mini-dental implants, and assisting with the treatment of 2 mini implant patients) and Dr. Julian Holmes (from South Africa, lecturing about ozone applications in dentistry, including implantology). We have been implementing what we've learned.

  5. Dr. Perlmutter has just returned from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 23rd Annual Scientific Session held May 15th-17th, 2007, read more here.

  6. See our March, 2007, edition of Smiling Times Newsletter.

  7. In October, 2006, Dr. Aaron Oh joined Bramalea Dentistry as an associate dentist, read more here.

  8. Our long-time patients continue to appreciate our long-time staff. Betty, Nancy, Jolanta, & Cathy have each been with us for more than 10 years, see staff for details. Nancy was honoured with a feature article by the Ontario Dental Assistants' Association. Frequent staff turnover has not been a problem here. Dr. Perlmutter recognizes the talents of each member and encourages everyone to act in the best interest of the patient, even if that means criticizing the boss.

  9. Lumineers by Cerinate (see www.cerinate.com) are now available at Bramalea Dentistry. In 2005, Dr. Perlmutter and Nancy attended a 2 ½ day dental seminar (lecture and participation) to qualify us to deliver this important cosmetic dentistry service. Dr. Perlmutter has been providing beautiful porcelain restorations for many years, but what is unique about Lumineers by Cerinate, is its patented formulation, allowing it to be made thinner than other dental porcelains. This means little or no cutting of teeth, in many situations. Therefore, no local anaesthetic injections, no pain during treatment, and no postoperative discomfort. (Dr. Perlmutter has provided similar treatment using direct bonding of composite resin, but Cerinate porcelain is definitely stronger than composite resin.) From September, 2005, to August, 2006, Dr. Perlmutter was accepting referrals from 1-877-LUMINEERS. This is a phone number that is being advertised internationally in popular magazines for the public to phone if they are interested in this Lumineers cosmetic dentistry service.

  10. One-hour* tooth whitening in the office, using the Oral-B Rembrandt Professional Chairside Whitening Kit (see www.denmat.com, products, whitening), augmented by the Sapphire PAC light, is available, along with a variety of take-home bleaching products. This enhanced whitening service is an important adjunct to Lumineers, and other cosmetic restorative services. (*Note that the appointment will be 1½ hours, requiring some preparation before and during the 1 hour of light shining on the teeth.)

  11. HealOzone® was introduced Dec. 7, 2004; the first office in Brampton to have it.
Photos showing how and where ozone was used for a variety of patients, by Dr. Perlmutter, are on display in the Photo Gallery. Ozone therapy. HealOzone® is the new machine that creates ozone from the oxygen in the air, delivers it to the tooth or soft tissue site, sucks the ozone back into the machine, and decomposes it to oxygen for release into the environment. Ozone kills bacteria and viruses, with no harm to the teeth or oral soft tissues.
    1. It is used on a tooth to kill bacteria that cause tooth decay. Then the tooth remineralizes to heal itself. The tooth also becomes less sensitive. This allows the dentist to not remove all tooth decay, to do less drilling, and maybe avoid local anaesthetic injections.
    2. Ozone can be used on a healthy tooth that has exposed, sensitive dentin to desensitize it.
    3. Ozone can be used on the lip or inside the mouth on soft tissue to kill viruses that cause cold sores or ulcerations. The ozone also promotes faster healing. The patient usually notices instant reduction in discomfort.
    4. For other uses of Ozone therapy in medicine and more information about HealOzone®, go to www.scican.com (Canadian section) and to www.the-o-zone.cc.

  12. New high speed and slow speed dental drills operated by electric motors have replaced the standard air-pressure driven dental drills. (I remember my first dentist, my cousin Gordon, in the 1950’s having only a slow speed drill operated by a pulley.) These new ones are quieter, with much less vibration, being significantly more comfortable for the patient, and reducing the stress level on me, the dentist. I can work more precisely and accomplish the same task in less time.

  13. Chair-Topper Massage Cushions (available at www.brookstone.com) now are present in two dental hygiene rooms and one treatment room. They provide a relaxing massage that most patients enjoy. They can be turned off if not desired. (I have compared similar products from other manufacturers, but found this one to be the best.)

  14. The hygienist now has her own intraoral digital camera with monitor. She can make a close-up photo of any teeth so the patient can appreciate what is happening there. (I have had a similar camera in my treatment rooms since 1996.)

  15. Our clinical area has raised computer flooring. The surface has been replaced, and worn carpeting has been replaced by new tiles in the central walkway of the clinical area. Cabinetry has been refaced. The clinical area has a refreshed appearance.

  16. In 2004, I won the Smile Gallery Contest of the Toronto Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, for the 2nd consecutive year. I continue to participate at every T.A.C.D. meeting, with other dentists learning from my work as I do from theirs. As a patient, you benefit from the knowledge that my work has to be good enough to not only satisfy you and me, but also must impress other dentists. That’s a high standard to aim for.

  17. New 10-year lease to February, 2014, will keep Bramalea Dentistry at it’s current location with free parking, public transportation access, and shopping mall convenience.

  18. We have purchased a 2nd Diagnodent diagnostic laser. A red laser light shines onto a stained fissure in the tooth surface to differentiate between simple stain and tooth decay. The 2nd one makes it available to the hygienist and to the preventive dental assistant to use.

  19. Nancy completed a Dental Practice Management course at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry. Bramalea Dentistry has been implementing what is relevant to our practice.

  20. What’s not new is our basic philosophy of “act in the patient’s best interest”. This has guided the investments we chose to make in the practice. (There are always nice and new things to spend money on, but what is really in the patient’s best interest?)
